In addition to his ongoing stomping campaign, Aiden now scoots, squeals, shrieks, laughs, yells, rolls over, makes a really awesome motorboat noise, and can almost hold a bottle all by himself. He has also started doing what vaguely resembles kissing -- you know, those open-mouthed, slobbery, baby kisses. So, because Aiden has added so much to his repertoire lately, and because his film debut got such rave reviews, here is some fairly recent video of Aiden in action (it took me a couple of weeks to get this post together).

Auntie and Aiden
Before Aiden was even born, back when we were still living in New York, I scheduled January 5 as my start date for my new job. Eric and I knew we would be putting Aiden in day care, and I figured that by the time January 5 came around, I would be more than eager to go back to work.
As it turns out, there is no way I could have anticipated how gut-wrenching it is for a new mom to resume full-time employment and leave her new baby in someone else's care. From the moment Aiden was born, I was dreading the inevitable day when I would have to do just that.
My understanding is that both of Aiden's grandmas would love to be his personal nanny, but, unfortunately, Eric and I live in this armpit called Virginia, thousands of miles away from both of the beloved grandmas. (I'm being nice when I call Virginia an armpit, by the way. I wholeheartedly LOATHE this state, and I have no shortage of foul language to describe it.) So, I resigned myself to the fact that we would have to put Aiden in day care, as we had planned all along. But as my start date for work drew nearer, I began to fret about simultaneously starting a new job and ditching my kid. I generally work well under pressure, but I felt certain I would crack under that level of stress.
And here's where Janice saved the day, the year, the universe: Janice offered to be Aiden's nanny for the first couple of weeks of my new job. She proposed that she fly out from California a few days in advance, so that she could observe my routine with Aiden, and so that they could get to know each other a bit. Then, starting January 5, I could trot off to my new job without having to worry a wink about my son's well-being.
And so that's what happened. Thanks to Janice, my return to the workforce was successful and as stress-free as it possibly could have been, and I have to believe that Aiden's transition to daycare was made easier by his two weeks with Auntie Janice. (He didn't have to simultaneously adjust to no Mom plus a foreign environment. Instead, he adjusted to no Mom first, then the foreign environment two weeks later.) Oh, and it probably goes without saying that Janice and Aiden totally hit it off. In fact, the very first time Aiden laughed was for Janice, and she got him to do it regularly while she was here.
So, without further ado, here are a few pictures of Aiden and his superhero Auntie Janice (plus one picture of Janice and Blue, because it's cute):
